VETERANS ON-LINE APPLICATIONS - A CAUTIONARY NOTE

Although veterans can now apply for VA compensation, pension and rehabilitation benefits online using Veterans On-Line Applications (VONAPP), NVLSP recommends against veterans doing so.

NVLSP recommends that veterans consult a veterans advocate before filing a formal application for compensation and pension (VA Form 21-526) or any other VA benefit. However, to ensure the earliest possible effective date for VA benefits, veterans should submit an informal claim to the VA as soon as possible.

An informal claim can be made by submitting a letter to the VA with the following language:

This is a claim for all VA benefits to which I may be entitled, including, but not limited to, [compensation for X, Y, and Z disabilities, pension, etc.]. I am submitting this informal claim in order to preserve the earliest possible effective date for any benefits to which I may be entitled. If you require me to complete a specific VA form in order to perfect my claim, please forward me the necessary form. Additionally, please send me a copy of my complete VA claims file, including my service medical records.

After you receive a copy of your VA claims file, you should have a veterans service officer review it to help you determine all of the benefits to which you may be entitled. The service officer can then help you complete the formal application for those benefits.
