NVLSP’s Basic Training Course gives veteran advocates an excellent basic understanding of veterans’ law, a good understanding of the VA appeals process, and an ability to win benefits for deserving veterans, their dependents and survivors.
We use the
NVLSP Basic Training Program as one of our training tools when training accredited service officers, and I highly recommend the Course to all Post, District, and County Service Officers.”
—JOHN HICKEY, Director of Rehabilitation and Department Service Officer, The American Legion Department of Indiana

“I took
NVLSP’s Basic Training Course about one year ago. I was a newly hired assistant service officer. Even though I had 29 years of military experience I had little knowledge of VA benefits. I found the course very helpful. It gave me a good basic understanding of VA programs, benefits and the duties of a service officer.”
—TOM LUDKA, Assistant Service Officer Department of Wisconsin American Legion

Basic Training Correspondence Course
on Veterans Benefits
Includes course manual, sample intake forms, and test material
This course is an introduction to veterans benefits and advocacy. It is a course you take in the privacy of your home, post, or office.

Designed for anyone who helps veterans and their family members obtain benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this course is also useful in making claimants for VA benefits better, more informed consumers.

This basic course covers almost every VA benefit, with special emphasis on entitlement to compensation and pension benefits, as these are often especially difficult to obtain. Almost all the cases that have come before the U.S. Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims (CAVC) deal with entitlement to compensation and pension.

Please note: this course does not cover the many varied state veterans benefits programs, nor does it attempt to cover every topic or issue in VA law. While complex issues are outside the scope of this course, many veterans, as well as those providing (or interested in providing) informal advice about VA benefits, will find much value in its content.

After completing this course, veterans should not expect to represent themselves – a qualified representative is still vitally important. However, informed veterans will be better able to assist their representatives in obtaining rightfully earned VA benefits.
